Class Expectations
We ask that people want to be there. Happy dancers are the goal.
-Come to class prepared to work hard
-Inform the instructor prior to class of any injuries the dancer may have sustained.
-Show respect for your teachers, other dancers, parents and the facility
-Follow the dress code please. Repeat offenses will be addressed.
-Try your best at all times, and don't forget to have fun
-Parents should be supportive and try not to dance vicariously through their children. The teacher may have their child trying something a little different for a reason. Please trust the teacher to know what is best.
-As with all things, practice will enhance performance and memory. Encourage your child to practice as much as possible without effecting their primary education. School comes first.
-Safely stretch at home when practicing using guidelines provided in class.
-Competing dancers are expected to practice regularly and required to keep a practice log signed by their parents.
-Parents are welcomed to observe class as this keeps them informed as well as shows support for your dancer.
Classroom etiquette violations will be dealt with by requiring the dancer to practice additional shedding movements and highcuts (basic movements). After the fourth consecutive violation, dancers will be excused from class for the day, and the parents notified. We believe that etiquette is important and the infraction is suitably addressed using basic movement practice as a way to make the dancer aware of the issue as well as work on some of the basic movements found in Highland Dancing.
Class Dress Code
-Shorts, ballet leotards, or fitted stretch leggings and fitted stretch capris are acceptable. Absolutely NO JEANS, or loose pants below the knee!
-T-shirts or tank tops
-Knee socks preferable
-Dance ghillies or soft toe ballet slippers.
-Hair is to be pulled back off the face.
The dress code will be strictly enforced with a violation of 25 repetitions of highcuts (a basic movement) for each offense.
Costume and shoe rental
For those with fast growing dancers or not wishing to purchase a kilt or shoes, you may rent from the dance school. Rental fees are $5 per event for kilts or $30 per year. A checkout form is required before a kilt outfit can be taken home. Shoe rental is available for continuous use of a pair of ghillies. Shoe rental is $10 per quarter, as some dancers may outgrow them faster than others. Some kilts and skirts available to student may not be suitable for competition. Also, due to size limitations, we may not have kilt outfits or ghillies available for rental in the dancer's size. Rental items damaged upon their return may be charged a predetermined replacement fee. Ordinary wear of ghillies will not be classed as damage.
Rental is available to Post School of Highland Dance, Inc. students and MHD performers only.
